An HTTP GET interface returns the probability for any first name, for a given country. Once looked up, it stays on file.

No more wrong salutations. Clean up existing data and assign genders automatically.
Right at the point of entry. Suggest the salutation while someone is filling in a form.

What happens on a request

RequestYou send a first name and country code via HTTP GET, e.g. /api/v1/names/Andrea/gender?culture=IT.
On fileIf that combination of name and country is already known, the answer comes straight from the database.
NewUnknown names are looked up once by an AI model (Claude) for exactly that country. The result is stored, so every further request comes from the file.

That's why the first lookup of a new name takes a few seconds, but every later one doesn't. It's also why the same name can differ by country: Andrea is usually female in Germany, usually male in Italy.

Parameters

`culture`	Country code per ISO 3166-1 alpha-2, default `DE`. Invalid values return `400`.
`guess`	`male` or `female`. The response then includes `check`: whether the guess was right.
`id`	Returned unchanged, e.g. your own record ID.

The probabilities are integers from 0 to 10. If both are equal, gender is unknown.

Access

The API is currently free to use, without sign-up or a key. Each IP address is limited to one request per second, with short bursts of up to five.

API keys with higher limits for production use are planned. If you need more requests or have questions, write to us.
